On Jan. 16, a group advocating for the Second Amendment rights of gun owners announced organized protests known as "Guns Across America" at 47 state capitols throughout the United States scheduled for Jan, 19, 2013.
The protests are the first signs of organized grass-roots backlash to President Barack Obama’s proposal of executive orders to authorize gun control initiatives on Jan. 16. Within hours of President Barack Obama’s address, the Guns Across America protests were posted to the group’s Facebook page, attracting immediate attention by going viral on social media.
After only a half day of organizing - midnight on Jan. 16 – the Guns Across America Facebook page has over 14,000 participants who are planning on attending, with another 4,000 listed as “maybe.”
The organizers are from a group known as "Gun Control=More Crime," and plan for the protests to begin at “high noon” on Saturday, Jan. 19. The group cites its mission as opposing President Barack Obama’s push for new gun control laws and getting its pro-Second Amendment message out to the public by writing:
“Guns Across America Events are committed to supporting the Right to Keep and Bear Arms as outlined in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. Our goal is to inform and educate the public about their Constitutional Rights . Our objective is to ensure that law abiding citizens retain those rights through peaceful and legal means.”
In California, the group’s local organizers will be gathering in Sacramento at the State Capitol at noon to demonstrate for Second Amendment rights in an effort to persuade state legislators and Gov. Jerry Brown to back away from new gun control measures.
The Sacramento Bee reported on Jan. 15 that Gov. Jerry Brown is reluctant to back any new gun control legislation in the state of California.
The state’s Democrat-controlled legislature seems more interested than the governor so far in efforts to pass new gun control laws, according to the Sacramento Bee. Democrats have a veto-proof majority in the state legislature, meaning they could potentially override any veto by Gov. Jerry Brown of new gun control bills.
The Guns Across America event has local organizers in every state in the nation except Alaska, New Jersey, and Wyoming, for which they are asking for support.
The group says its protests will take place in the capital city of every state with the exception of Florida, where the event will take place in the more “centrally located” Hernando County area.
Organizers say the choice of Saturday is to accommodate potential activists who are busy during a normal Monday through Friday workweek by writing, “The theory behind doing this event on a Saturday, is most conservative gun owners work a typical Monday through Friday job. I'm hoping for a massive response by doing this on a weekend.”
The timing will also coincide only one day before President Barack Obama’s second inauguration in Washington D.C.
CNN political analyst Erick Erickson summed up President Obama’s political calculations on Jan. 15, writing:
“We know the President understands he is putting Democrats in a terrible spot. We know because he did nothing after the Aurora, CO shooting in the midst of a political campaign. He had to wait so he wouldn’t spook voters.”
President Obama faced stiff grass-roots opposition in the opening two years of his first term in office from the Tea Party movement. Obama will begin his second term with grass-roots protests opposing his gun control efforts.
